The 10-Minute Silence That Changed My Leadership Style
Why the best decisions happen in stillness, not noise
What if the best thing you could do as a leader is nothing?
For most of my career, I equated leadership with action. Speaking up. Making decisions. Driving results.
But the more I led, the more reactive I became. Always moving. Rarely still.
The Story
A few years ago, I was leading a sales team through a tough quarter. Numbers were down. Pressure was high. I was in meetings all day, firefighting, strategizing, motivating.
One evening, exhausted, I sat in my car before driving home. I didn't turn on the radio. I just sat there. Silent.
For the first time in weeks, I heard myself think.
In that silence, I realized something: I'd been so busy reacting, I'd stopped reflecting. I was managing problems, not leading people.
That 10-minute pause in the car became a daily practice. Before I went home, I'd sit in silence. No phone. No music. Just presence.
The Shift
Silence isn't empty. It's where clarity lives.
When you create space for stillness, you access a different kind of intelligence. Not reactive. Not rushed. Just clear.
The best leaders I know aren't the loudest. They're the calmest. They pause before they respond. They listen before they decide.
Silence taught me that leadership isn't about filling every moment with action. It's about knowing when to act and when to wait.
The Practice
Here's how to integrate silence into your leadership:
10 minutes of intentional stillness, once a day.
Find a quiet space (your car, your office, a park bench)
Set a timer for 10 minutes
Sit. Breathe. Notice.
Don't meditate. Don't solve problems. Don't plan. Just be present.
At first, your mind will race. That's normal. Let the thoughts pass like clouds.
After a few days, you'll start to notice something: clarity. Ideas. Perspective.
The answers you were chasing will come to you — not because you forced them, but because you made space for them.
Stillness is strength.
The best decisions don't come from noise. They come from clarity.
Lead from the inside out.
